Aberdeen-based safety systems design specialist, Process Safety Solutions (PSS), announces the launch of its engineering consultancy division, PSS Engineering Consultants. This is an independent team of highly skilled engineers, specialising in the delivery of control and instrumentation projects, from concept through to close out.

David Green, founder of PSS, says, “PSS Engineering Consultants was set up as a direct response to our clients demand for quality control and instrumentation engineering services. PSS has always offered safety system engineering consultancy as part of its suite of services, so the inclusion of control and instrumentation design services on a global scale is a natural progression for our ambitious team.”

With a projected turnover of around £850,000, the division is on target to exceed its forecasted figures in this, its first year alone. This compliments Process Safety Solutions projected turnover of over £4 million for 2014.

2013 saw the PSS Aberdeen Headquarters undergo extensive renovation following £1 million of investment. Process House, on Great Western Road in Aberdeen, officially opened in August and boasts a training and support centre, enabling the team at PSS to create a local hub for their clients to enhance their safety management strategies offsite. Clients are able to carry out a range of activities including Factory Acceptance Testing simulation and type testing in order to reduce their operational downtime. This complex acts as the main hub for the company’s oil and gas service offering.

Supporting this is the company’s Colchester office, opened in October 2013. This provides a base for their southern UK clients with interests in the SNS sector. These clients are supported by a team of specialists based in the area, and enables PSS to assist clients nationally, whilst still maintaining local services.

David continues, “We will be looking to expand our core team of engineers to forty across the 2 company divisions by this time next year to bolster our global support, with a further twenty consultants located in our client’s engineering teams in Aberdeen alone.”

“Oil companies are continuously striving to reduce their overall operating costs and streamline their engineering processes. Our engineering consultants manage every aspect of projects themselves, thus removing the costly overheads often associated with detailed design delivery. The emphasis on the formation of this division was also to fit in with our clients’ needs, and not the expectation that our clients should fit in with ours.”

PSS Engineering Consultants service offering includes:

Early Front End Engineering Design (EFEED)

Historically clients conceptualise projects at a very high level for overall budget decisions. PSS Engineering Consultants recognises that there is a requirement in the process where a small investment, at this early stage of a project, will save time and money throughout the FEED and detailed design phases. The division understands that its client’s time is at a premium and therefore offers a service to define and develop EFEED deliverables. Through a close working relationship they will develop quality engineering documentation to use throughout the lifecycle of the project including:

• Obsolescence Studies

• Statement of Requirement Development

• Translation of Legacy Documentation

Front End Engineering Design (FEED)

Through experience and application, PSS Engineering Consultants recognises that the FEED stage of the overall engineering process is critical in the successful delivery of any project. Often underestimated, this early stage of the project has the greatest level of influence and is used for the overall budget sanction for detailed design. Lack of time or investment at this stage will ultimately lead to escalating costs during the later phases of the project. The team of engineers work closely with clients to ensure all aspects of the control and instrumentation scopes are covered within their studies. They understand that one model does not fit all, and tailor client FEED studies to their exact requirements.

Detailed Design

Attention to detail is the cornerstone of good engineering practice. Through in-house engineering offices, PSS is able to utilise its extensive portfolio of engineers to deliver a fully integrated detailed

design service for all control and instrumentation projects. The team can continue work from the EFEED & FEED stages, as well as taking on new projects where the FEED work is already developed. Working with clients engineering and construction contractors, the dedicated engineering team take the project from kick off through to closeout.

An open, honest and transparent approach to engineering ensures clients are always aware of costs and can forecast budgets with confidence.

Project Support

PSS Engineering Consultants offer control and instrumentation support to their clients for all stages and aspects of project development. The team of experienced and adaptable engineers are on call at short notice to react to clients’ requirements. They are also able to provide support through their own offices as well as seconding engineers to client or EPC premises. Examples of the support services include:

• Full suite of C&I Deliverables

• 3rd Party Vendor Management

• Site Standards Review & Development

• ICSS Documentation Management

• Independent design review service

• Independent Witness Testing of Vendor Systems

Often overlooked until the completion of detailed design, the commissioning of any project is critical and should be developed early alongside the engineering deliverables. PSS Engineering Consultants team, many of whom are experienced site commissioning engineers, will work with the chosen detailed design office to develop commissioning strategies in line with client standards. They have

extensive experience developing live ICSS cutover strategies that maximise clients production and minimise any cost deferments for plant shutdowns. On completion and approval of the commissioning strategies, the team of engineers are available to either manage or assist the clients commissioning teams at site.

As-building is equally as important as all previous stages of the engineering process. If attention to detail is not given here, then the next project requiring the information will undoubtedly incur increased costs. The experienced design office can manage all aspects of the As-building process. Utilising a team of CAD ops and designers PSS ensure the right level of detail is given throughout the lifecycle of the As-build process.

David concludes, “We pride ourselves on being seen as an extension of our clients’ teams and provide unrivalled engineering support through every aspect of the project. We only employ engineers who are like-minded and put quality and the desire to deliver before anything else. We are currently looking for control and instrumentation engineers and designers to join our team. If anyone would like the opportunity to work for an ambitious, innovative and dynamic company then we would love to hear from them.”
